William Wycherley’s ’The Country Wife’ captures the wicked censorious world of the late 17th Century in a
rip roaring satire of the Restoration Period. Written in 1675, the themes of the seventeenth century society resonate with the audience of today as we see Harry Horner devise a scandalous plot in order to further his sexual prowess, and the dark comical scandal that results in raucous infidelity at the expense of the elder generation of husbands whose concerns about other matters result in the wandering attentions of their wives and other women of the town. A play where the raunchy humour of the Restoration Comedy is embodied in the gritty reality of the plot, ‘The Country Wife’ promises to take you on a censorious roller coaster that will make you laugh and think as you take a glimpse into this scandalous world.
